House Mentor Candidates
Current Guests
When possible, House Mentors should be selected out of the pool of current Guests in your home, or elsewhere. This will result in candidates with greater awareness of our policies, mission, procedures, and the responsibilities of a House Mentor. They should be selected based on their general ability to perform the tasks required of them. An assessment of their ability to be firm, fair, lead Guests, and build a healthy recovery community. You will rely on them to run a home, and careful selection is the key to having a great House Mentor and great homes.
Outside search
If you are unable to source a House Mentor from your pool of Guests, you can engage in a search using tools available, with a focus on networking in the recovery community to fill the position.

House Mentor Search
When there is a need for a House Mentor, we must conduct a House Mentor Search. Learn more about this important step in our House Mentor Search & Evaluation article.
House Mentor candidates (those who have expressed interest in becoming a House Mentor) should apply using this link.
Operations Managers are responsible for House Mentor Search.
Chartered Operators: For Chartered Homes, Chartered Operators are responsible for conducting a House Mentor Search.
House Mentor Evaluation
Candidates for the position of House Mentor undergo a House Mentor Interview. with the Operator.
If the candidate is not a current Guest, they must complete the Guest Application prior to being considered as a House Mentor. They must be approved as a Guest as well as perform well in a formal interview in order to qualify to be a House Mentor. Once selected, a House Mentor candidate must undergo House Mentor Training before assuming the House Mentor position.

This interview guide is an outline of some helpful questions and discussion points to cover during an interview with a potential House Manager. The interview could be done in person or over Zoom.
Feel free to ask additional questions, or skip over questions. Often, House Managers will come from inside the home as existing residents. In these cases, you can obviously tailor the interview for the situation.
